- The word “red” is derived from the Old English r?d, which originally meant simply “the color red.”

- Red could also mean to redden or blush. As a verb, it may refer to being angry and flushed with rage.

- In some languages (e.g., Finnish), the name for “red” can be used as an exclamation meaning “stop!” in order to halt someone who has done something that was forbidden by law or custom. This usage derives from the association between red and blood; stop signs use both colors because these words are warnings of danger that should not be ignored .

- From this perspective, we might say that when people call someone “red,” they are metaphorically saying that someone has behaved in an aggressive manner or is behaving like a predator.

- In medieval times, the word red could also mean to purify with fire by burning something (such as amulets) and ridding them of black magic . This usage derives from the color’s association with flame. We sometimes see this meaning reflected in animals such as red dragons, which have been associated since ancient times with heat and fire because of their energetic behavior .

As early as 1727, we find evidence for people using “red” figuratively for anger when Oliver Goldsmith writes: “I was at first afraid he might be angry; but I found him only under concern.”

- A red flag is a vexillological symbol (a type of heraldic banner) for warning. In the 13th century, when knights were in danger they would hoist their banners on a spear or lance to signify that it was not safe for others to attack them from behind . The Swiss Navy later co-opted this tradition and started using flags instead of spears.

In 1703 we find evidence for people using “red” as an adjective meaning angry because Jonathan Swift writes: “The whole company then unanimously agreed with me; so I began again and said, he had been guilty of such insolence!— He had used such expressions!” These words are still used today like the phrase “seeing red.”

- In the 16th century, British English speakers started using the word “reddish” to describe people with a reddish complexion as this is where it gets its name from. Originally in Old and Middle English, “red” could be used to refer to any color of hair or skin including pale white but eventually came just for those who had either deep pink or brown complexions .

- Unlike other colors like blue, green and yellow that have origins in nature (being made up of some combination of air particles), there are two different stories behind how we got our words for ‘red’. One says that it’s named after an old Indo-European word meaning fire because many things that are red share the same color; and the other says it comes from an old Germanic word meaning blood. This is where a lot of confusion can come in because there’s no one true answer when you’re dealing with something so deeply rooted in human history .

- One thing we know for sure though, is that this hue has been used to represent danger since ancient times. In Greece, before they became Rome, people would wear red as a symbol against their enemies during battle or even just on days like New Year’s Eve to ward off evil spirits .

- Across most cultures including America and Japan (where wearing a bright shade of pink is considered bad luck), if someone has purple hair then it signifies nobility while people with red hair are often seen as a sign of misfortune.

- Redheads also have more sensitive skin than people with other colors and types, making them highly susceptible to sunburns.
